On June 24, the transmission power of the ±1100 kV Zhundong-Wannan UHV DC transmission project was increased to 9 million kilowatts, setting the global transmission power record again.
According to Wang Hong, head of the Changji converter station of the State Grid Xinjiang Maintenance Company, 9 million kilowatts of transmission power means that 216 million kilowatt-hours of electricity can be transmitted to East China every day, which is equivalent to the electricity generated by burning 66,000 tons of standard coal. Residents in Anhui Province have about 2 days of daily electricity demand.
In order to ensure the safe operation of the power grid after the transmission power of the ±1100 kV Zhundong-Wannan UHV DC transmission project is increased, the State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. has successfully completed the special work of transmission power upgrade verification and analysis in 3 months and adopted effective measures. Passed the stable check of the National Electric Power Dispatching and Control Center on 24th, the transmission power of the project was increased from 8 million kilowatts to 9 million kilowatts during the critical period of the peak summer.
The increase in transmission power of the ±1100 kV Zhundong-Wannan UHV DC transmission project will effectively promote the consumption of tens of millions of kilowatts of new energy “green power” in Zhundong, boost the scale of new energy installations, promote power transmission from Xinjiang, and improve the power grid Optimize the allocation of cross-regional resources to alleviate the 1 million kilowatt power supply gap of the East China Power Grid during the summer.
At the same time, the increase in the transmission power of the project has increased the transmission capacity of “Xinjiang Power Transmission” to 16.4 million kilowatts, and the average daily external power transmission exceeds 390 million kilowatt-hours.
The increase in the transmission power of Xinjiang Power has driven the rapid development of Xinjiang’s installed power generation capacity. According to data from the State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd., as of May 2021, the installed capacity of Xinjiang’s power grid was 104.52 million kilowatts, which was 7.4 times the amount before the “Xinjiang Power Transmission” was put into operation.
The enhancement of Xinjiang’s power delivery capacity has solved the problem of new energy consumption. From 2011 to 2021, Xinjiang’s wind power and photovoltaics experienced explosive growth, with installed capacity increasing from 1.34 million kilowatts to 35.82 million kilowatts, and the rate of wind and solar abandonment was once as high as 37%. With the addition of new energy to the “External Power to Xinjiang”, Xinjiang’s clean energy utilization rate has increased significantly. As of May 31, 2021, Xinjiang Electric Power has sent out 112.8 billion kilowatt-hours of new energy, and the curtailment rate of wind and solar power has dropped to 6.3%.
At present, Xinjiang’s power delivery has covered 20 provinces and municipalities across the country, and the accumulated electricity delivered has exceeded 400 billion kilowatt-hours. Xinjiang’s energy resource advantages are being transformed into economic advantages at an accelerating pace.
During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, the State Grid Xinjiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. will continue to promote the “External Power Transmission from Xinjiang” to further strengthen the cross-regional power transmission capacity, and plan to form a main network framework of “seven loops for internal supply and six channels for external transmission” by 2025 The pattern plays a more important role in serving the goal of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” and promoting the economic and social development of Xinjiang.
